Wordpress and Joomla Baja Content Management Systems – CMS stands for Content Management System which is an application used to manage work flow needed to collaboratively create, edit, review, index, search, publish and archive various kinds of digital media and electronic data. There are various nomenclatures known in this area: Web Content Management, Digital Asset Management, Digital Records Management, Electronic Content Management and so on. The bottom line for these systems is managing content and publishing, with a work flow if required. Unlike Web-site builders like Microsoft FrontPage or Adobe Dreamweaver, a WCMS (web-content-management system) allows non-technical users to make changes to an existing website with little or no training. A WCMS typically requires an experienced coder to set up and add features, but is primarily a Web-site maintenance tool for non-technical administrators.

The preferred CMS used by Baja Website Creations is Wordpress for several reasons. Wordpress – initially a “blogger” application has developed over the years into a lightweight CMS that can be used for many different layouts and functions. Running in second place for website development is the Joomla CSM.

“Out of box” is the difference between WP and Joomla easy to recognize: Wordpress 2.7 comes with 679 files while Joomla 1.5 weights in with 4629 files….. that is in both cases without any plugins or template that can be added. This is where customizing starts! Using ready available themes and “tweaking” them as wanted or writing and developing one from scratch is the part that makes out free available systems like Wordpress or Joomla YOUR system. Basically every design can be taken and “ported” to the respective application.

So if you’re happy with the looks of your static website but like to have the advantages of an CMS so your website becomes dynamic is where B.W.C. offers its services.

What are static and dynamic websites? There are many static websites on the Internet, you won’t be able to tell immediately if it is static, but the chances are, if the site looks basic and is for a smaller company and simply delivers information without any bells and whistles, it could be a static website. Static websites can only really be updated by someone with a knowledge of website development. Static websites are the cheapest to develop and host and many smaller companies still use these to get a web presence.

Advantages of static websites

  • Quick to develop
  • Cheap to develop
  • Cheap to host

Disadvantages of static websites

  • Requires web development expertise to update site
  • Site not as useful for the user
  • Content can get stagnant

Dynamic sites on the other hand can be more expensive to develop initially, but the advantages are numerous. At a basic level, a dynamic website can give the website owner the ability to simply update and add new content to the site. For example, news and events could be posted to the site through a simple browser interface. Dynamic features of a site are only limited by imagination. Some examples of dynamic website features could be: content management system, e-commerce system, bulletin / discussion boards, intranet or extranet facilities, ability for clients or users to upload documents, ability for administrators or users to create content or add information to a site (dynamic publishing).
